Just because someone is a technical expert, it doesn’t make them a good leader!
Many people need to understand the fundamental philosophy of leadership to be promoted to leadership positions.
Unfortunately, it appears to be a rite of passage in business to promote someone based on their performance on the job, their technical expertise.
They may be good with clients, sales, accounting, or other specialist skills.
However, when it comes to leadership, this is another matter.
The talents that make a person great in their previous non-leadership positions rarely are the same that will make them a great leader.
The best thing that businesses can do is to support individuals development with leadership positions.
We have all been there with leaders who can’t lead because they do not have the skills
or
equally have yet to be allowed to develop the right skills.
The great news is that I support newly appointed/established leaders with their development on an ongoing basis.
